Recording an individual to produce a multitrack song

Build a song from scratch

One of the most common projects I do as a recording engineer is work with an individual who wrote a song, but doesn’t have a band to help them get it recorded.

Step 1- set up a recording session, and establish the bpm of the song.

Step 2- create a scratch track.
This establishes a starting point for you to build from. It can be just a rough idea of the song. What’s important is that the tempo and key signature not going to change.

Step 3- well there’s no specific step 3, at this point you will be producing the tracks by recording acoustic instruments, midi instruments and using premade loops.

As you add more parts. The song can evolve and change in sound considerably.
