Want awesome sounding recordings? It all starts with an awesome sounding source, which is something you need to learn to recognize if it is, or isn't, and if it isn't, then how do you make it better?
Part of my philosophy for recording, is that generally, the order of the recording steps is also the same as the order of importance. The first step is the source. This is the instrument, vocal, or original sound that is being recorded. It may seem like I’m pointing out the obvious, but the recording will only sound as good as the source. Yes, it is sometimes possible to make improvements in post, but those improvements are minor. If you are recording an acoustic guitar, and it is out of tune, it’s not going to sound good. If your vocalist is not a good singer, then tell them to get vocal lessons. I’m not joking, I’ve done it many times.
Your job as a recording engineer isn’t just to capture the sound, but also to get it to sound awesome, no matter what it takes. You need to be able to recognize if that guitar is out of tune, if that drum sounds thin, or if the timing is off. And you need to be able to remedy it. If I want to be a model, and I hire a photographer, I don’t want a photographer that captures what I actually look like, I want a photographer that makes me look better. That’s the attitude you need to have in order to get a good reputation as the recording engineer that makes awesome sounding recordings. It all starts with having an awesome sounding source.
